Get Involved
I want to get involved. Now what?
You’re informed of the latest developments in Michigan politics. You’re following Michigan legislators to see who is siding with liberty and who the worst statists are. You might even know about some good or bad legislation that your local council or board is pushing. In short, you want to know how you can do more in the fight for good, limited government—and what the RLC-MI can do to help. You’re in the right place, so read on.
If you want something done right…
SOMEONE ought to do something about that mayor/senator/law. Nobody has the time to fight every piece of bad legislation, or every bad candidate, or for every good candidate in the state. But there are always fights worth starting (or joining). If those of us who care about these fights don’t get involved, who do you think will? To modify the famous saying, statism triumphs when good men do nothing.
What’s worth doing? We have our ideas…
We hope you don’t think that the RLC-MI’s fearless leaders have a monopoly on the knowledge of what the good fights are. We don’t (but we do have ideas). What the RLC-MI does have is a vehicle with which to organize libertarian and like-minded activists to get involved in Michigan politics.
Along with this vehicle for organization is a tendency to hear about
- candidates,
- legislation,
- petition drives,
- and reasons to support or oppose these things,
that any individual activist would be unlikely to learn of on his own. The RLC-MI also makes efforts to gather this information, such as through the survey that we sent to every GOP state house candidate prior to the 2008 primary elections.
Since we take the time to gather and analyze this information, we do have ideas about who is worth supporting, and the campaigns to which we can provide substantial help. The RLC-MI will tell you about these campaigns (on our updates and endorsements pages), and we’ll be volunteering and contributing to the ones most in need of our help as well.
But we know that you have unique information too
Just as we said that nobody has the time to fight for every cause, we know that it’s impossible for any person to learn of all of them ahead of time. But an organization has a shot at learning of most of them. That’s one place you can help.
We want you to inform us RLCers when you know of a candidate, bill, or cause that’s in line with our mission. Even—especially—local politics can be worthy of activist time and resources. You certainly don’t have to join our group to help your causes, and to ask for our help with them.
We campaign for liberty. You should too.
Once the RLC-MI analyzes the information that we gather about candidates and causes, RLCers make decisions about who we want to help. Then we do what we can to help them. We might gather associates of ours and canvass for a candidate. We might participate in recall efforts. We might make donations. Quite simply, we campaign for liberty.
You can (and should) join us in these efforts, whether you join our group or not. Please volunteer for or make donations to our endorsed candidates. (You’ll know who we’re helping based on our endorsements and updates sections.)
You should also join the RLC-MI
To repeat an important point: We’ll take all the help we can get for our causes, whether you join our group or not.
If you want to have a say in RLC-MI leadership elections, however, then you’ll need to become a dues-paying member of the group. You can take care of that here. These dues (and other donations!) contribute to outreach for new members, information gathering, and campaigning, all of which make us a more effective group.
Paying dues gets you concurrent membership in the RLC national group, which means you can vote at the national convention. Membership also gets you access to restricted websites and automatic delivery of the RLC eNewsletter. But most importantly, your membership contributes to the fight for liberty!
